Desire Reunion

Some bands are so important, that they shouldn’t disappeared easily. Their fighting spirit and their experiences is so valuable for new generation of musicians. Malaysian’s owned hard rock band, Desire is one of those important band that shaped up the rock movement in Malaysia since 80’s. Way back in 1987-1988, Kelantan rockers was so proud of their homegrown bands, like Desire & Zodiak. Desire had their successful days when Polygram released their debut album Sumpitan Senja in 1988. With  good melodies, great guitar work and brilliant songwriting, Sumpitan Senja managed to captured mainstream listeners attention. Ballads like Dian Cinta & Pemergian were heavily played in various mainstream radios during that time.

However their creativity peak was in their 2nd album, +-x/. This album definitely heavier, more dynamic guitar work, a teaspoon of blues plus more whammy bar and dive bombing guitar work by Lie. My favorite tracks are Otak Ular , Benar Tetap Benar and +-x/. this 2nd album also served mainstream audience with their all time great ballads such as Bias Cinta & Sentuhan.  This was my favorite cassette in those days, always in my Toshiba Bombeat compo.

In 1990, Desire released their 3rd album Kata Kata Kata, featuring new vocalist Eury Khan. With this album, they experimented with new sound, a mixture of funk with hard rock element. The recording was a bit polished and more strings arrangement mixed in. Eury left the band and formed Nobat and then S.O.S in early 90’s. After long hiatus, Desire released their 4th, album Putri Saadong in 2007, which is more modern, relaxed but still had their hard rock elements.

Now, these great rockers are back. Personally, these unsung heroes deserve their respect for doing what they love most, rock music. For those rockers who don’t have any clue what’s Desire all about, come and witness their showcase. Then you’ll know, how great they are. Desire shouldn’t be forgotten. Hope to see Desire releasing their next album soon..TQ for all the great music. Full respect!

Last few weeks, i was invited to attend an awesome performance in Auditorium Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur. An awesome performance by veteran rock band U-topia and Amuk. This was no nonsense showcase as the bands were accompanied by the orchestra conducted by Mr. Shahadan Ahmad.

Dying Fetus Live in KL

DYING FETUS is an American death metal band, known for their outspoken political views, and for being one of the few death metal bands who follow a political nature. Earlier lyrics showcased graphically gory themes. Legendary death metal heavyweights DYING FETUS return with their crushing new full-length, Descend into Depravity.

One of the most infamous and influential death metal bands of the past 10 years, DYING FETUS pummel and pound their signature-style brutality into the worldwide landscape with the subtlety of a full-fledged war. Descend into Depravity takes DYING FETUS to new sonic levels, and is easily the band’s finest hour.

Soundscape Records presents Kula Shaker, one of the most popular British bands of the post-Britpop era.

Led by outspoken frontman Crispian Mills, the band enjoyed great commercial success in the UK between 1996 and 1999, notching up a number of Top 10 hits on the UK Singles Chart, including “Tattva”, “Hey Dude”, “Govinda”, “Hush”, and “Sound of Drums”. In addition, the band’s debut album, K, reached #1 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming the fastest selling debut album in Britain since Oasis’ Definitely Maybe.

The band are known for their interest in traditional Indian music, culture, and mysticism, with a number of their most famous songs, including “Tattva” and “Govinda”, featuring lyrics written in the Hindu sacred language, Sanskrit. In addition, many of the band’s songs feature traditional Indian instruments, such as the sitar, tamboura, and tabla, juxtaposed with guitar-heavy, Western rock instrumentation. While the band’s interest in all things Indian was partly inspired by a pilgrimage to Indian that Mills undertook in the early 1990s, it was also born out of a love for the Indian influences present in the music of The Beatles and other late 1960s acts.

Kula Shaker disbanded in September 1999 but reformed in 2004 for sessions for the School of Braja compilation album. This led to plans for a full comeback, although the reformation was not widely publicised until the beginning of 2006. The band’s third album, Strangefolk, was released in 2007.

On 28 June, they are releasing a new album called Pilgrim’s Progress, the band will be doing their first ever Asian tour and are set to perform in Kuala Lumpur.

Stay tuned for ticketing info.

Orianthi Live in KL

Australian guitarist Orianthi is hot and she is highly talented. The good news is she is also set to play a concert at KL Live, Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur on Aug 4. At 24-year-old Adelaide-born Orianthi (real name Orianthi Panagaris) has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She’s opened for her hero, Steve Vai, backed an American Idol, Carrie Underwood, traded solos with a legend, Carlos Santana and shared the stage with the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.

This female rocker is best known for being the late Jackson’s lead guitarist for his comeback concert series, “This Is It” at the O2 Arena in London, which didn’t happen because of the pop superstar’s death. She appears prominently in the “This Is It” concert film. However with her debut album “Believe”, Orianthi has stepped out as a bankable artiste in her own right. Her thunderous, hook and riff driven debut has given her radio hits like “According to You,” Suffocated”, “Think Like A Man” and “Shut Up And Kiss Me”. Orianthi at KL Live on Aug 5 is ticketed at RM98, RM188 (rock zone) & RM258 (VIP upper tier). For more details, browse (rockthisjoint.com.my) and (axcess.com.my). Concert hotline 03-7880-0749.

Slash Live In Malaysia

Legendary Rock n’ Roll guitarist Slash is coming to Kuala Lumpur this August on a world tour promoting his latest effort, a self-titled solo album with a list of featured artists that reads like a who’s-who in the world of rock.

As of right now, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are the only confirmed dates in the region before he flies off to Japan to continue the tour, but rumors are going around that the organizers are leaving an open end for the possibility of slotting in more shows in the region!

Keep those fingers crossed, cause I know I am!

::UPDATE – 15 JUNE 2010::

Firefly recently held a press conference at the Sunway Resort Hotel & Spa, the official hotel for this event and has confirmed the official details of the concert for Malaysia!

“It’s a privilege for Firefly to bring in a guitar legend like Slash to Malaysia. Slash transcends the age divide with kids as young as 18 to adults as old as 50 years old. His music is pure rock, going back to the time when music was just with drums, bass and guitar only. No rapping, no keyboards, just the classic rhythm section.” said Ms Angelina Fernandez, Head of Marketing and Communications of Firefly. And we don’t disagree at all!
